The mental images conjured by statistics are disquieting. Pregnant mothers with stretch marks and arthritis, toddlers with mummies who look like their grannies and teenagers whose parents are drawing pensions. Dr Alastair says two trends are emerging now in child bearing and it should be of concern to everybody:
1. Obese mothers
2.older mothers
The health implications are:
- Dangerously high blood pressure
- potentially fatal blood clots
- Premature births
- children with Down's syndrome
The women who do these are already menopausal but what they do is take injections to kick start their menstrual circle again. Maria Del Carmen Bousada De Lara who conceived twins gave birth days before turning 67 and died of Ovarian Cancer in 2009 leaving the children orphaned.
Pauline Lyon is British oldest parent who lied that she was 49 when in fact she was 51 when she started to get treatments. She has 3 children and is in fact 70! Her youngest child being 15. Her children actually say people often ask if she is their grandmother.
The increasing idea of women having children at old age is driven by society's near universal belief that everyone has a right to do whatever they want to do whenever they like. This looks like a trend that is here to stay, what do you think of this?
